Happy birthday Malcolm Little aka El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz

On this day, May 19th of 1925, Malcolm X was born.

"Whites who are sincere don’t accomplish anything by joining Negro organizations and making them integrated. Whites who are sincere should organize among themselves and figure out some strategy to break down prejudice that exists in white communities. This is where they can function more intelligently and more effectively, in the white community itself, and this has never been done."

"Brothers and sisters, if you and I would just realize, that once we learn to talk the language that they understand, they will then get the point. You can’t ever reach a man if you don’t speak his language. If a man speaks the language of brute force, you can’t come to him with peace."

I wanted to draw Malcolm X smiling because I realized after looking for reference shots that almost all the sketches and pictures of him were him all serious’d the fuck up and idk it felt like there was more to him than that and wanted to capture a side of him that expressed this idea. Something that went against what white folks and other ppl were taught about him and who he was. This was the man our government killed and I wanted people to see him as the human he is, and I feel like smiles capture that in people. Something about a smile reminds you “I’m still here”. Idk if that makes sense.
